About Richard
Richard Valdez lives in North Hollywood with his wife, who is a school teacher, and their two children. He was born in Panorama City California and graduated from San Fernando Middle and San Fernando High School.
Richard volunteered to serve in the US Army after graduating High School and received an Honorable discharge. He recalls his toughest day in the army as the day he and his platoon did an 18- mile march with a “full rack sack” that weighed about 65 pounds. He was assigned to the generator section of the 197th Support Battalion at Fort Benning, Georgia. During his service, it was a great honor for Richard to serve on Color Guard Duty performing the 21-gunshot salute at funerals of US Veterans.
Richard attended LA Valley College after his service in the Army, before transferring to San Diego State University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in psychology. He is thankful for having the GI bill benefits that helped him make it through college. Richard also studied Administration of Justice at Mission College.
Richard has been working in the Real Estate Field for over 15 years; conducting residential home sales, Mortgage Loan Originations, and has been actively involved in assisting home owners in their attempts to obtain loan modifications in order to keep their homes.
Richard has been a Veterans advocate and a member of Veterans for Peace. In 2010, he took the initiative and had the courage to challenge the congressional pro-war incumbent Howard Berman in the primary. His yard signs stated, “Bring our troops home” on one side and “4 People, NOT corporations” on the other side. He ran as a Peace Candidate with a grassroots campaign and managed to get 17% of the vote.
Richard likes to run the Los Angeles marathon and do Triathlons. His toughest race was completing an Ironman distance triathlon in Sonoma County, which was a 140.6 mile race. Over the last 10 years, he has used his racing as a vehicle to fundraise for charities, some which include: Team Parkinson’s, the Tsunami Victims Relief, Hurricane Katrina, and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. He has also organized several Annual blood drives to help the Blood center at Children’s Hospital.
As a 2012 congressional candidate for the new 29th district, Richard sees himself as a man with a vision and a soldier on a mission. A mission, which can only be accomplished by the will and the help of the people.
